Kenoteq has received almost € million in funding from Zero Waste Scotland to increase production of its eco-friendly K-Briq. The new company, created out of Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University, says the award, part of Scotland's Circular Economy Investment Fund, will allow it to produce more than two million eco- bricks a year. Eco bricks are made from overrecycled demolition and construction material, while their manufacturing process produces only % of the CO emissions of traditionally fired bricks and requires % of the energy.
Sam Chapman, managing director of Kenoteq , said: “The construction industry faces a tremendous challenge in meeting decarbonisation targets. The industry sends more than million tonnes of waste to landfills in Europe every year, at enormous cost to it and the environment. In the UK, construction and the built environment accounts for approximately % of all waste generated in Phone Number List Scotland. “The K-Briq presents an opportunity for the construction sector to reduce landfill, limit dependence on finite resources and harness waste materials to create a more sustainable and ecologically viable built environment.
Ecological bricks drastically reduce energy use, both in the manufacturing process and once in use, as it has twice the insulating properties of existing bricks and blocks. By using recycled pigments, it can be manufactured in a range of colors giving flexibility to architects and design planners. “With this funding, we will scale manufacturing capacity from a pilot plant to industrial scale production by developing a new manufacturing line in Scotland. “We will then create a template for the provision of production systems to selected waste management partners in Scotland and the UK.” If you have a project to share or know someone, you can contact us.
